Archery Hunter Education Course

with Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife

Aug 31, 2017 at 6 pm, runs for 2 weeks

As of January 1, 2017 the department will enforce the requirement that a hunter wishing to hunt with bow andarrow hold a valid archery license.

The Archery Education course will provide you with a wealth of knowledge regarding equipment, proper hunting methods, responsibilities, and general safety. Most classes will have some outdoor exercises. Passage of a final exam is required. You must attend every day of the class in order to receive your certificate.

Total Course = 10 Hours

  • Laws = 30 Minutes
  • Safety = 2 Hours
  • Equipment = 2 Hours
  • First Aid & Survival = 2 Hours
  • Map & Compass = 1 Hour
  • Ethics, Landowner Relations = 2 1/2 Hours

Class Meets: Day 1--Thursday, August 31, 6pm to 9pm

Day 2, Saturday, September 9, 9am to 4pm.

Each year, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife provides more than 350 courses on hunting with firearms, bow and arrow, and trapping. Courses are attended by roughly 7,500 students and taught by over 800 volunteer instructors trained by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Heartsaver® CPR

Heartsaver® CPR AED is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills.

This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

Heartsaver® First Aid

Heartsaver® First Aid is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services arrives. Students learn duties and responsibilities of first aid rescuers; first aid actions for medical emergencies, including severe choking, heart attack, and stroke; and skills for handling injury and environmental emergencies, including external bleeding, broken bones and sprains, and bites and stings.

Maine Driving Dynamics Defensive Driving Course, for ages under 65

This course is for those under the age of 65.  A driver improvement course aimed to improve a student's defensive driving awareness and abilities.

This five-hour course includes discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine's highways.

Our goal is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce vehicle-related crashes.  A student who completes the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record.

This course is being presented by Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

Maine Firearms Hunter Safety

Ready to take to the woods and go hunting this fall? Unless you can show proof of an adult hunting license held in any year starting in 1976, every hunter in Maine must attend an approved hunting education course. Taking a hunter education course is also a great idea If you would like to refresh your knowledge of safe and responsible hunting.

Get Hunting certified in 3 steps:

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Requirements

  • You must be at least 10 years old to take this online course.
  • You must be a resident of Maine to take the online course.

After passing the online course, you are required to attend the Skills and Exam Day (Sunday, September 10, 9am--4pm) to complete your Hunting safety certification.

The Maine Firearms Hunter Safety Course is taught by trained, certified volunteer instructors according to statewide standards. The course covers the following topics: proper firearms handling (rifle and shotgun), survival/first aid, hunter responsibility, map and compass, and landowner relations.

In the online portion of the course, students complete quizzes and an exam. Upon completion, students are provided with a voucher to attend the skills and exam day. Students must complete the online course and provide voucher number to register for the Skills and Exam Day.

In the skills and exam session students demonstrate that they can safely:

  • Handle a firearm
  • Participate in activities
  • Bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents
  • Pass a 50 question test with a grade of at least 70%.

Skills and Exam Day: Sunday, September 10, 9am--4pm for Firearms Hunter Safety skills day.
